Droplet Characteristics and Near Nozzle Dispersion of Cold and Thermal Fog

چکیده
In an effort to improve application methods for controlling sand flies in desert environments, a hand-held ultra-low volume (ULV) aerosol generator, a truck-mounted ULV aerosol generator, and a hand-held thermal fogger were evaluated. The velocity and temperature of the air and characteristics of droplets generated by these aerosol generators were measured at various distances from the nozzle. The droplet size characteristics were measured for three flow rates each of BVA-13 mineral oil and a mixture of water and nonionic surfactant with a phase Doppler particle analyzer. Moving 0.9 m away from the nozzle, the velocity of air produced by the two hand-held sprayers decreased to <5 m/s, whereas the truck-mounted sprayer still had an air velocity of 15 m/s. The air produced by truck-mounted cold fogger, thermal fogger, and hand-held ULV applicator was 38, 49.2, and 8.5 C above ambient temperature, respectively. Increases in flow rate, generally, did not affect the droplet size for the two hand-held units; however the droplet size increased as the flow Manuscript received August 15, 2011; accepted for publication May 3, 2012; published online October 18, 2012. Vapor/liquid phase interaction in flare flashing sprays used in dermatologic cooling
Little knowledge exists concerning the atomization mechanisms and dispersion of flashing sprays in dermatologic cooling. This study examines flashing of a high superheat fluid flowing through micro tube nozzles resembling current medical devices. A one-dimensional, semi-empirical model of refrigerant flow through capillary tubes is used to quantify internal flow characteristics. These results p...
متن کاملExperimental and Modelling Investigations of Droplet Dispersion in a Turbulent Jet
The turbulent dispersion of non-evaporating droplets in an axisymmetric round jet issuing from a nozzle is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The experimental data set has a well-defined inlet boundary with low turbulence intensity at the nozzle exit, so that droplet dispersion is not affected by the transport of nozzle-generated fluctuating motion into the jet, and is influenc...
متن کاملA Theoretical Mass Transfer Approach for Prediction of Droplets Growth Inside Supersonic Laval Nozzle
Proper estimation of droplet growth rate plays a crucial role on appropriate prediction of supersonic separators performance for separation of fine droplets from a gas stream. Up to now, all available researches employ empirical or semi-empirical correlations to define the relationship between droplet growth rate (dr/dt) and other operating variables such as temperatures (T and TL), Pressure (P...
متن کاملInfluence of Cryogen Spray Cooling Parameters on the Heat Extraction Rate from a Sprayed Surface
Cryogen spray cooling is used to prevent epidermal thermal damage during port-wine stain laser therapy, despite the limited understanding of the fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer characteristics of cryogen sprays. In recent studies, it has been suggested that the heat flux through human skin could be increased by changing physical parameters such as nozzle-to-skin distance, nozz...
متن کاملNumerical characterization of multi-nozzle spray cooling
This work aims to study the characteristics of multi-nozzle spray cooling using CFD method based on the fundamentals of air flow and liquid droplet collision dynamics. A mathematical model for the two-phase flow was presented. The simulations were performed using a EulerianeLagrangian approach. Focus was placed on revealing the flow behavior with multiple nozzles, the droplet trajectory, and th...
